NORTH
POLE NUTRIAS
Narrative. 27 minutes. VHS
Directed by Rick Delaup 2002
Welcome to the colorful and offbeat world of Miss Pussycat and her far-out
puppets. New Orleans nutrias, Dusty and Treasure, win a vacation package
to the North Pole, now a tourist destination built up as a Vegas-style
village. They enjoy a complimentary suite in the famed Ice Cave Hotel.
The orange-toothed couple are even treated to a free musical extravaganza
hosted by Santa Claus (Al Scramuzza). Is this free dream vacation package
too good to be true? Dusty and Treasure discover the real reason they
were called out to Santa’s winter wonderland. A nasty, but musically
inclined, Virus (voice of Sheriff Harry Lee) has been destroying all
the toys in Santa’s workshop. Could Dusty (voice of Bunny Matthews)
and Treasure hold the antidote to destroy the virus and keep Santa’s
annual Christmas Eve trip out of peril? With performances by Quintron
and Miss Pussycat and Glitter N’ Gold.

RUTHIE THE DUCK GIRL
Documentary. 83 minutes.
VHS
Directed by Rick Delaup 1999
The amazing true story of the
most famous eccentric the French Quarter has ever known!
Ruthie the Duck Girl, New Orleans’s Ruth Grace Moulon roamed the
streets of the Vieux Carre for 50 years, in a wedding dress or fur coat,
sometimes on rollerskates – with pet ducks following behind. This film follows
as she visits her favorite French Quarter bars, cadging cigarettes and beer
“for later.” Despite her fame, Ruthie was a complete mystery until this documentary.
Few people ever knew the wedding dress was for a faded love. Ruthie’s decades
old “betrothal” is revealed along with many other fascinating and nearly
forgotten details of an extraordinary life.
Ruthie the Duck Girl
was supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment
for the Arts, the Louisiana State Arts Council, and the Louisiana Division
of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation,
and Tourism.

MONSTER AND THE STRIPPER
Exploitation
91 minutes VHS
Directed
by Ron Ormond 1968
This movie has it all: nudity,
gore, drugs, a monster, music, comedy, and impossible-to-duplicate 60s New
Orleans local atmosphere. Director
Ron Ormond plays Nemo, a drug-dealing gangster who runs a Bourbon Street
strip club. He begins looking for a new attraction to pull in the tourists,
and they decide to capture a
Swamp Monster and put it on display amidst the exotic dancers as a
Mighty Joe Young type of attraction.
A pretty tough character, Nemo orders his men to dump the full contents of
a large spitoon down the throat of a double-crosser. Sleepy LaBeef, a huge
50s rockabilly singer, makes his acting debut as “the swamp thing,” snorting
and grunting while wearing a loincloth, fake teeth, a fright wig, and some
hair pasted on his chest (sometimes). He plays a swamp beast so savage, that
he rips off a guy’s arm and proceeds to beat the man to death with his own
bloody limb. And, as part of the stage show, actually geeks a chicken and
drinks its blood. This film features a bevy of dancing dames with wondrous
‘60s wardrobes. The best of the many bizarre and entertaining strip acts
is Titania, a mean-looking wild woman who does an incredible acrobatic act
(twirling flaming tassels), eats fire, and dances.
She also starts a good cat fight back stage.
Monster and the Stripper was shot partially on location in
New Orleans and in the swamps! For its New Orleans-soaked ambience and go-go
dancing milieu alone, you gotta love this movie! The entire package should
be declared a national treasure since it captures the late-‘60s French Quarter
on film for posterity.
