    Through the years, Ruthie the Duck Girl made many friends from all walks of life. Rich and poor; young and old; black and white; gay and straight; cops and criminals; suburbanites as well as the homeless. Having a wide variety of friends made life more exciting for Ruthie. Although many people made efforts to befriend Ruthie in bars, it was not easy to get close to her unless you treated her as an equal, and with respect.

    The best way to get in with Ruthie was to buy her a beer and cigarette "for later," but if you invaded her space or tried to touch her hat or back, she'd slap you, curse you out, and send you on your way. Many people will tell stories of drinking in the bars with Ruthie the Duck Girl, but few knew that Ruthie had a close circle of friends who cared and provided for her on a daily basis while she was living in the French Quarter.
