A fixture on Decatur Street, Maxine was a well-known prostitute in the 60s. Usually starting at La Casa's (Decatur and Toulouse) and then working her way down to the Gin Mill, Maxine was regularly seen consoling young Greek boys, greeting familiar faces, or stopping to philosophize with her more intimate fans. She was adored by certain flower children as an earth mother. When once asked why she bought and wore dime-store diamond rings, she replied, "It's the thought that counts."
